Air Conditioner Cycling Class
To maintain a specific temperature within the home, air conditioners will naturally turn on and off during operation, which is known as cycling. Short cycling is a common problem that causes the air conditioner to shut off before it reaches the desired temperature, negatively effecting home comfort level. There are many factors to look out for if an air conditioner is having an issue with short cycling:
- System sizing: The most common cause of short cycling, an air conditioner that’s too powerful for the home will cool the space so quickly that it turns on and off constantly. This leads to big temperature swings, frequent breakdowns and high energy bills.
- Air filter: A clogged filter forces the air conditioner to work harder to make up for the loss of airflow. The excess pressure on the blower motor, compressor and other air conditioner components can cause them to overheat and cause your A/C to short cycle.
- Refrigerant: When an air conditioner is low on refrigerant, the system won’t be able to effectively cool the home. This strains the system and forces the various components to work harder and become overheated, leading to a short cycle.
If you notice your air conditioner is turning on and off too frequently, check the air filter and make sure it’s clean. If that doesn’t work, contact V-Fuel and we’ll have our V-Mechanical Services professional technicians come down and assess the problem quickly.
